Marc Tormo Altimira, an esteemed coffee roaster, entrepreneur, and creative consultant, is a name synonymous with excellence in the specialty coffee movement. With over 25 years of international experience, Marc’s dedication to the craft and his commitment to the “From Seed to Cup” concept have propelled him to become a recognized figure in the coffee industry. This article explores Marc’s inspiring journey, his contributions to the coffee world, and his vision for delivering exceptional coffee experiences.

Born on February 23, 1971, in Barcelona, Marc’s coffee journey started at the age of 23 when he opened a boutique café with his sister in his hometown. This entrepreneurial endeavor sparked his passion for coffee, setting him on a path of continuous learning and exploration. His travels to Ethiopia and South America further ignited his curiosity about coffee culture and led him to study the best practices for producing world-class coffees.

The Search for “The Ideal Place”: In 1990, Marc embarked on a transformative visit to India, where he discovered the rich spiritual practices of Eastern Philosophy. His quest for the “ideal place” eventually led him to Auroville, a unique international community, in 1996. Marc has since made Auroville, Tamil Nadu his home and actively participates in various community projects, blending his love for coffee with his dedication to sustainable living.

After returning to India in 1997, Marc envisioned creating his own coffee brand. However, he patiently waited for the market to be ready. Finally, in 2008, Marc’s Coffees was born. The brand’s name, chosen for its simplicity and connection to the founder, reflects Marc’s commitment to delivering memorable coffee experiences. Building strong relationships with coffee planters, ensuring the highest quality and consistent supply, became a cornerstone of Marc’s approach.

Challenges and Education: Educating both customers and planters about specialty coffee proved to be a significant challenge for Marc. Developing a taste for specialty coffee takes time, and he recognized the importance of investing in education programs and workshops. Through these initiatives, Marc aimed to enhance awareness and appreciation for the unique qualities of specialty coffees among coffee lovers in India.

Marc’s coffee research revolves around the concept of “From Seed to Cup.” To ensure exceptional quality, Marc extensively traveled across the Western Ghats in India, exchanging knowledge about every process that contributes to a winning coffee. Categorizing coffees based on roast profiles, such as light, medium, and dark, allows Marc to cater to diverse customer preferences. Additionally, the brand offers Nano lots and international coffees in limited quantities, catering to connoisseurs seeking unique and exclusive coffee experiences. Marc’s Coffees is certified organic, reflecting the brand’s commitment to sustainable and nature-friendly practices.

Marc’s passion for entrepreneurship extends beyond coffee. He is the founder of Coffee Ideas!, a pioneering company in India that roasts high-quality certified coffees for the Indian gourmet market. Marc has also been involved in turnkey café projects, winning accolades for his contributions to the Indian coffee industry. Co-founding Marc’s Cafe, Roast & Taste and Catami, Dreamer’s Cafe in Auroville further showcases his creativity and dedication to providing exceptional coffee experiences.

Marc’s Cacao Project: Marc’s ventures extend beyond coffee, with his foray into the world of cacao. The Marc’s Cacao project aims to promote organic Indian Premium Cacao, collaborating with organic cacao farmers and selling their raw cacao beans under the brand name “Marc’s Cacao.” Marc’s exploration of cacao has taken him to plantations, manufacturing units, and conferences in Ecuador and Colombia, further enriching his knowledge and passion.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Marc enjoys various hobbies and interests. Nature treks, running, bird watching, cooking, and spending time with friends are some of his cherished activities. He finds solace in the melodies of good jazz, bossa nova, reggae, Western classical, and Indian ragas. Marc is happily married to Matilde Mir, and together they have two children born in Auroville.

Marc Tormo Altimira‘s remarkable journey in the coffee industry exemplifies passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. From Barcelona to Auroville, Marc’s pursuit of perfection has driven him to create exceptional coffee experiences. His expertise as a coffee roaster, entrepreneur, and creative consultant, combined with his profound respect for nature and community, continues to shape the specialty coffee movement in India.
