Amitesh Kumar Sinha has been appointed as the new CEO of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), marking a significant leadership change as the government gears up for the mission’s second phase.

Sinha, who was recently named additional secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), steps into the role previously held by Sushil Pal.

His appointment comes at a crucial juncture as India intensifies efforts to position itself as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and semiconductor design.

Launched in 2022, the India Semiconductor Mission was built on the foundation of the Semicon India programme, under which the government committed INR 76,000 crore to boost the development of silicon and display fabs, compound semiconductors, and more.

As part of the upcoming second phase, ISM is expected to expand its focus, possibly including support for essential gases and materials required in semiconductor manufacturing.

So far, the mission has cleared proposals from major players like Kaynes Semicon, Tata Electronics, CG Power, Micron Technology, and Suchi Semicon to establish their units in India.
