ChatGPT parent OpenAI is set to establish its first office in India, located in New Delhi, later this year, as it looks to deepen its presence in its second-largest market by user numbers after the US.
The Microsoft-backed company has already registered as a legal entity in India and started building a local team. The office will focus on strengthening ties with governments, enterprises, developers, and academic institutions across the country.
India has become a critical growth market, with weekly active ChatGPT users growing more than fourfold in the past year. The country also stands among the top five global developer markets on the OpenAI platform and hosts the largest population of student users worldwide.

The expansion reflects India’s rising importance in the global AI ecosystem, supported by strong digital infrastructure, a growing pool of AI talent, and increasing enterprise adoption.
Earlier this week, OpenAI rolled out its lowest-cost subscription plan in India at $4.60 per month, aimed at making its services more accessible to a wider base of users.
