Byju Raveendran is an Indian entrepreneur, investor, and educator who co-founded Byju’s with his wife Divya Gokulnath.

Byju was born in the Kerala village of Azhikode in 1980 to Raveendran and Shobhanavalli. He attended a Malayalam medium school where his mother taught mathematics and his father taught physics.

His interests include football, cricket, and table tennis. After earning his B.Tech from the Government College of Engineering in Kannur, he worked as a service engineer for a multinational shipping firm.

Byju opened his own coaching school, Byju’s Classes, in 2006 to help students prepare for major competitive tests such as the CAT, GRE, and GMAT. He popularised new teaching strategies such as video courses and interactive study materials among pupils.

Raveendran married one of his early students, Divya Gokulnath, in 2009. They have two sons together.

Byju was established in 2011 and is based in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Think and Learn Pvt. Ltd., a firm founded by Byju Raveendran, Divya Gokulnath, and a group of students, created the app.

He launched “Byju’s-The Learning App,” the only startup in Asia financed by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife’s foundation, the “Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.”

Byju’s launched an app built by Raveendran for students to learn on their mobile devices in 2015, as smartphone screen sizes increased. The app was expanded to the United Kingdom, the United States, and other English-speaking nations in October 2018. By July 2022, the app had been downloaded more than 150 million times, with users spending an average of 71 minutes per day on it.

In 2017, “Harvard University” included Byju’s- The Learning App as one of its case studies.

Byju Raveendran was featured on the cover of Forbes India magazine on September 15, 2017.

Ernst & Young presented him with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award on February 14, 2019.
“Byju’s-The Learning App” became the official sponsor of the Indian Cricket Team Jersey in July 2019.

Byju is leading the Education for All Initiative, which will provide 10 million students in India from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds with access to new tech-driven learning solutions through Byju’s platforms.
